But I pray to God that you may do nothing wrong. Not so that we and our teaching may appear to be approved, but that you may continue doing what is right, even though we by comparison may seem to have failed. For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth and the gospel the good news of salvation. We are glad when we are weak since Godís power comes freely through us, but you by comparison are strong.

We would like to focus our attention on the part of the text scripture in v8 For we can do nothing against the truth ,but only for the truth and the gospel the good news of salvation. The word tells us in John 8:32 We shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. It is a very great privilege to know the truth, to know the particular truths which we are to believe, in their mutual dependences and connections, and the grounds and reasons of our belief, to know what is truth and what proves it to be so.
It is a gracious promise of Christ, to all who continue in his word, that they shall know the truth as far as is needful and profitable for them. This is why we have to Stand Firm on His Word because he is the truth. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The knowing, entertaining, and believing, of this truth does actually make us free, free from prejudices, mistakes, and false notions, than which nothing more enslaves and entangles the soul, free from the dominion of lust and passion; and restores the soul to the government of itself, by reducing it into obedience to its Creator.
The mind, by admitting the truth of Christ in the light and power, is vastly enlarged, and has scope and compass given it, is greatly elevated and raised above things of sense, and never acts with so true a liberty as when it acts under a divine command, 2Co 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Gal5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
The enemies of Christianity pretend to free thinking, whereas really those are the freest reasoning that are guided by faith, and those are men of free thought whose thoughts are captivated and brought into obedience to Christ.
To Stand Firm on the word is to hold to it and believe what it says Joh17:17-20 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth. Thou didst send me into the world, even so sent I them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word. The gospel of salvation is through Jesus Christ Act 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Isa 40:8 The grass wither, the flower fade: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. By confidence in the word of the Lord, and not in any creature. The mouth of the Lord having spoken it, the voice has this further to cry he that has ears to hear let him hear it.
By this accomplishment of the prophecies and promises of salvation, and the performance of them to the utmost in due time, it appears that the word of the Lord is sure and what may be safely relied on. Then we are prepared for deliverance when we depend entirely upon the word of God, build our hopes on that, with an assurance that it will not make us ashamed.
The power of man, when it would appear for the deliverance, is not to be trusted to; for it is but as grass in comparison with the word of the Lord, which is the only firm foundation for us to build our hope upon.
When God is about to work salvation for his people he will take them off from depending upon creatures, and looking for it from hills and mountains they shall fail them, and their expectations from them shall be frustrated.
The Spirit of the Lord shall blow upon them; for God will have no creature to be a rival with him for the hope and confidence of his people; and, as it is his word only that shall stand for ever, so in that word only our faith must stand. When we are brought to this, then, and not till then, we are fit for mercy.
The word of our God, that glory of the Lord which is now to be revealed, the gospel, and that grace which is brought with it to us and wrought by it in us, shall stand for ever; and this is the satisfaction of all believers, when they find all their creature-comforts withering and fading like grass.
Thus the apostle applies it to the word which by the gospel is preached unto us, and which lives and abides for ever as the incorruptible seed by which we are born again, 1Pe 1:23-25 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which live and abide for ever.
For all flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass wither, and the flower thereof fall away but the word of the Lord endure for ever and this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. The word of God is the great means of regeneration, Jas1:18. The grace of regeneration is conveyed by the gospel this new and second birth is much more desirable and excellent than the first.
This the apostle teaches by preferring the incorruptible to the corruptible seed. By the one we become the children of men, by the other the sons and daughters of the Most High. The word of God being compared to seed teaches us that though it is little in appearance, yet it is wonderful in operation, though it lies hid awhile, yet it grows up and produces excellent fruit at last. Those that are regenerate should love one another with a pure heart fervently the word of God lives and abides for ever.
This word is a living word, or a lively word, Heb4:12. It is a means of spiritual life, to begin it and preserve in it, animating and exciting us in our duty, till it brings us to eternal life: and it is abiding; it remains eternally true, and abides in the hearts of the regenerate for ever. The word of God is the great instrument of a sinner's purification.
Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth. The gospel is called truth, in opposition to types and shadows, to error and falsehood. This truth is effectual to purify the soul, if it be obeyed. Many hear the truth, but are never purified by it, because they will not submit to it nor obey it. The Spirit of God is the great agent in the purification of man's soul.
The Spirit convinces the soul of its impurities, furnishes those virtues and graces that both adorn and purify, such as faith Act 15:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith , hope 1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purified himself, even as he is pure. the fear of God Psa 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. and the love of Jesus Christ.
The Spirit excites our endeavors, and makes us successful 1 Cor2:11-13 For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the manís spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Holy Spirit who is from God, so that we may know and understand the wonderful things freely given to us by God. And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Holy Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language to those who possess the Holy Ghost which we need to "STAND FIRM ON HIS WORD" AMEN BE BLESSED!
